The breif

Create a visual pattern, language, and vernacular in a short title sequence to establish a mood for the following movie or show. There needs to be a thread of similarity, a continuity in aesthetic and concept throughout each deliverable of a brand package. A vital part of any title sequence is the Logo resolve. This is the last impression the viewer is given prior to the start of the film, show, or event.

The project

Supernatural is a show about love and how family don’t end in blood. There’s also a bit of monster hunting sprinkled in here and there. The early seasons really revolved around the brother’s hunting journal, a keepsake and guide to survival left by their dad. As the seasons progressed and stakes grew larger, and their own knowledge of the supernatural was surpassing their father’s, the journal was referenced less and less.

This was such a shame because the show is masterfully portrayed as a worn, hand-me-down, haphazardly put together monster hunting journal. Written information needed to keep your family safe, with notes, speculations, tricks and tips, sigils, spells, and recipes. It captured the homemade aesthetic of the show that so many people admired.

My goal was to recreate the feeling of flipping through the journal. It’s homemade, it’s a collection of found materials, it holds all the important knowledge a capable hunter needs to know to keep their found family safe.

ORIGINAL SKETCH & HANDWRITTEN ELEMENTS

ORIGINAL DESIGN BOARDS

I had originally planned for the titles to have a dark red highlight behind each name. I quickly realized while building the files in After Effects that it was too difficult to read. I solved this by removing the highlight altogether and making the titles themselves red. The ending card also changed from my original design boards. It was simplified and brought more attention to the growing ink stain than the messily drawn scribbles
